Costume Contest

The costume contest! We do so love Halloween. It’s when they think that Jeff is going to take off his mask.

Seriously, we love the creative things that people are worn to our events and we’ve been in love with that for years.

If you want to dress to impress, then you have a chance to come stand before a panel of judges and be voted on for your costumes skill, creativity, freight factor, humor, uniqueness, many other traits.

Bring your best costume! Bring your worst costume! Come on in and have fun!

Scott Helland – Guitarmy of One

Scott Helland creates melodic, euphoric acoustic guitar instrumentals. His eclectic musical past, keen melodic sense, live looping technique and tasteful use of guitar effects creates a compelling soundscape.

Armed with his trademark Godin Multiac guitar, Helland has created a musical world of his own influenced by punk rock, spanish and gypsy guitar styles. Infectious melodies weave around his looped rhythms and straight forward beats. The songs are short, fun, and to the point with tuneful acoustic guitar lines as the sonic focus.

“Helland is yet another accomplished ex-punk who has made the striking transition to atmospheric soundtracks.” Jack Rabid, BigTakeOver Magazine.

Currently he is also the guitarist and co-founder of the internationally touring New York based duo, Frenchy and the Punk, a popular attraction in the indie cabaret, steampunk and faerie festival scenes with singer Samantha Stephenson. In the eighties he was also a member of the infamous Western MA hardcore punk bands Deep Wound, (which included Dinosaur Jr’s J Mascis and Lou Barlow,) and Outpatients. Over the past few years, Scott has been joining Dinosaur jr onstage at events like Governor’s Ball, Fun Fun Fun Fest and Austin City Limits to perform old Deep Wound tunes.

Helland has been writing, recording and performing music since his early teens. He has released over 25 recordings including 8 solo CDs. Helland also released his art book Feast, a collection of more than 50 pen and ink drawings, in 2015.

This Way to the Egress

A band of musical miscreants from all walks of life, EGRESS is a tapestry of worldly influences and an alchemy of sounds modern and past, familiar and forgotten.’

If Tom Waits and Patti Smith made a musical lovechild it might sound a little like EGRESS. Whether you know them as the “dance band to ring in the end of the world with” or by their “raise your spirit, raise a glass and drop a beat” attitude, EGRESS will leave their mark on you as the six-person troupe cascades onto the stage in an explosion of sound and sight. EGRESS is equal parts unruly vaudeville, ebullient world-beat and three ring circus all the while playing an amalgamation of worldly genres catapulting their audience through time and space with unexpected shifts of styles, tempos and time signatures.

EGRESS is Taylor Galassi (lead vocals, accordion, piano); Sarah Shown (vocals, piano, violin); John Wentz  (tuba, backup vocals); Joe Lynch (trombone, backup vocals); Jaclyn Kidd (guitar, banjo) and Nick Pecca (drums and percussion). Hailing from a wide variety of musical backgrounds with a diverse array of influences, EGRESS crafts intricately arranged audible cocktails which will be sure to make you move. Their rambunctious stage show generates enough energy to light up a small city while their genre-bending miscellany leaves the audience wondering what will happen next. Beware: EGRESS’ infectious energy is contagious. After EGRESS you might never be the same, but you will be coming back for more.

EGRESS is also playing a SOLD OUT Halloween show with The Dresden Dolls this October, but you can catch them first at Blackthorne!

The Haunt

Haunted house on the empty field at night

What a glorious haunt!

We’ve seen bigger, and we’ve seen fancier, but seldom have we seen a haunted house put together with so much love and creativity, and so great of a desire to bring you both fear and joy.

This mad scientist’s massacre mansion is a steampunk themed haunted house, perhaps the only one still operating in the world.

The haunted house will be open on Saturday night for certain, and if we have all the hunters by then, Friday night as well. As a guest your admission into the house is free.

You can go as often as you want throughout the night!

But we warn you…It becomes scarier and scarier through the night. Our hunters have told us more than once that they have heard a set of unexplained footsteps and every once in a while a hunter will feel a cool breath on their neck only turned around and see nothing there at all.

But you know hunters. There’s probably nothing wrong.

Probably. Probably.

Come take a look at our Kickstarter as we see about finishing off a few very special touches!

We’re Making A Steampunk Haunted House!

Please click here to view!

There’s a lot of research and discussion below, so if you want the short version, here it is:

The world’s largest Steampunk event, the world’s largest dark/alternative social media site, and an incredible, family-owned, hand-built resort in the Catskills are teaming up to create a Steampunk Haunted House which will be available both to those who travel there, and internationally (through special backer-only shows and live walkthroughs!)  That Steampunk Haunted House is actually already 99% completed.  We want your help to push it over the top!

This is not exactly what Jeff of Jeff of Jeff Mach Events looks like, but it’s close.

Get ready! First 50 backers will be entered into a contest for having a drink with Jeff Mach and members of the Blackthorne and Haunt team!

The Grand Halloween Ball

What makes a splendid Halloween ball? Well admittedly, being invited there by a group of vampires and witches in order to sample unholy delights would promptly be pretty neat, along with an animated skeleton band playing waltzing tunes from the 1880s.

We don’t quite have all that, but this ball is absolutely unbelievable. Because the resort makes its own food, and because you have access resort necessarily we can get in weeks in advance to begin decorating the ballroom and you can contribute if you want!

You can bring your own decor, your own special items, your own pieces to make that room into its dark, spookmatic best!

The treats!  The drinks!  The many joys!

The autumn treats! The candy and the cake! The dancing the conversation, the merriment!

This is the kind of ball which in and of itself can easily cost $75 to $150 New York City. But we bring it to you as just one part of Halloween the Catskills, because we love you.

And of course, let’s NOT forget the Halloween punch, regular and “high test” varieties.

The Great Steampunk Roadster, Halloween Edition

“This project started in December of 2007 when I decided that I wanted to build a steam powered vehicle and that a kit car from the 1970’s would be the perfect platform on which to build it. I went on eBay and within a short period of time found exactly what I imagined would be the perfect car.

“I also started researching steam engines for automotive use and learning about boilers and control systems. It didn’t take long to come to the realization that the amount of design, experimentation, and fabrication necessary to construct a function steam powerplant was beyond what I could do while I still had a day job.

“Thus, I decide to resurrect the original VW engine and drive train and make a fun and easy to operate and maintain roadster.”

~Jake Von Slatt
Creator of the Roadster

We at JME and Halloween In the Catskills love this car.

We love driving it around, we love having on property, we love all of the people taking pictures with it, and we love the fact that Jake has decided to leave with us as its new home. It’s perfect here at Blackthorne, located near Thomas Williford’s giant robot.

So come see us spook it up!

Come see it in its most haunting and most Halloween disguise. Take all the photographs you want!

The car’s decoration will be changing every year and with each event.

The Bonfire

“Some say the world will end in fire,
Some say in ice.
From what I’ve tasted of desire
I hold with those who favor fire.”
~Robert Frost

There are a few Halloween traditions as ancient and is powerful as that of the bonfire. We are all aware that the Druids of the Samhaim built great bonfires in the shape of humans and animals, sewn together through animal skins, to peers tonight and we can the veil between the worlds that the dead might walk in the living might know them again.

Now, round outbound fire, we telltales, we see stories, we stand and silently enjoy the warmth, we stare into the flames and see what inspiration or demons might pop out.

It’s one of the simplest get one of the most incredible experiences of the weekend. Join us for it!
